Kampala City was brought to a standstill on Saturday morning as KCCA launch the Mega-Cleanup Drive ahead of President Museveni’s visit later this year.

The Minister for Kampala Minsa Kabanda franked by the Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka and Kampala Central Division Mayor Salim Uhuru arrived at the Constitutional Square amid cheers from the huge crowd that had gathered as early as 7:00 am.

The Huge crowd led by the Minister, later marched down the Duster Street through Luwumu Street to Nakasero Market up to the Old Taxi Park chanting praises of their leaders and later came back to Constitution Square via Burton Street.

While officiating at the re-launching of the Smart City campaign, the Minister for Kampala Minsa Kabanda urged all leaders in the city to closely work with the Executive Director Kisaka whom her Mandate as an accounting officer for the city has just been renewed for another term in office.

In her remarks, Kisaka described the Clean-up exercise as a very significant one having awarded contracts to two organizations, Seven Hills and the Community SACCO which is in line with government policy of providing employment opportunities to its citizens.

She cautioned the leaders of the organizations which won the tenders to avoid engaging in unnecessary wars. “ We are encouraging cleaning teams not to engage in fighting each other because the tax papers need good service.’’ She cautioned.

“ We have organized a season of cleaning and mobilizing our people within the city to ensure that they maintain good hygiene in their homes and neighborhoods so as to get rid of dangerous pests like bedbugs and cockroaches.

“We have to work together, advice one another and as KCCA, we are committed to collecting garbage once they are put in the right places and take it to the right area.  also want to warn the residents and those who work in the city to avoid throwing garbage in the drainage s because its causing us floods and inconveniences.”

’’The Executive Director also asserted that collective efforts are needed if we are to realize the smart city goal and this implies why a team of over 3000 cleaners’ workforce was recruited by the tenderer.
