TAXI DRIVERS ARE IN FEAR OF THE SHORT TIME THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO REGISTER

Drivers are in shock over the registration orders issued by the police.

The Uganda Traffic Police led by Senior Commissioner of Police Lawrence Nuwabiine has ordered every taxi driver operating on Masaka road, Kampala Gulu highway to register with their vehicles within a week.

Nuwabiine said they have done this to remove unlicensed drivers who are driving vehicles because they have discovered that road accidents in Masaka are caused by unlicensed drivers who some use marijuana and alcohol while driving which causes accidents on Masaka road and others.

The police report showed that Masaka road was the most affected road followed by Kampala Gulu highway and other roads.

79 people have died in the accident since 1st to 8th this year.

Rashid Ssekindi, the head of the Uganda taxi operator federation (UTOF), said they had already started this to register taxi drivers with the aim of reducing accidents in the country.

Ssekindi said the police have ordered taxi drivers to register because they find that most of the taxi drivers do not have licenses to drive on roads like Masaka and not in the country.

Some people drink alcohol while driving and smoke marijuana which causes accidents. Ssekindi urged taxi drivers to register.

And He said the driver did not wade them as the taxi drivers would not allow him to drive a car with people.

He said there were others who did not have driving permits but drove at night and during the day for fear of the police.By Dan mugula
