In an effort to rejuvenate the party membership, Democratic Party has issued its road Map for the grass root elections that will bring in new National Delegates.
The Party Secretary General Dr. Gerald Siranda who is also one of the Uganda’s representatives in EALA, while addressing Journalists at the City House based Party Headquarters, said that in the road Map they will start with renewal of Party membership card by the individual members.
The Party National Executive Committee (NEC) will seat in Mbale on 19th -20th April 2024 on the modernity of handling the exercise and the new party constitution will also be unveiled.
“We have embarked on party rebuilding by allowing old members to renew their membership and register news ones. This time round we will have online registration through a DP portal we will put in place before the exercise commences in early May 2024’’ Dr. Siranda revealed.
He further said that the grass root elections will end in mid May and by end of the same month members who wish to be at NEC will commence showing their interests in the various positions through applying and in June 2024 those who wish to carry the party’s flag for presidential elections of 2026 will be vetted.
According to Siranda’s proposal which is pending approval by the party’s NEC, any member who wishes to carry the flag will have to pay UGX 20m, the vice president 15m while vice president for the different regions will pay 10m each. The youth and sub-region representatives will cough 2 m each.
The National Delegates conference that will usher in the news leadership will be held in August 2024 and this is where the epitome of elections will be.
Dr. Siranda also called all those who left the party to came back and register as members and stop masquerading as the party leaders because there are legitimates leaders recognized by the electoral commission as per the law.
In the amended constitution, Kampala has been given a special status where each division is treated as a district and other position such as that for people with disabilities and workers have been created.
