Business in Abattoirs is picking up well as we progress with the Easter season despite the shock of the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in Kampala announced by a senior government official.
The Chief coordinator in Kampala City Abattoir located along old port bell road Kiddu JohnBosco in an exclusive interview said that because after taking measures as instructed by the government business has now normalized although not yet at the level it should be.
Kiddu also said that the number of cattle slaughtered from his abattoir is still low since the mid-month shock that caught the dealers unaware.
“ The supply is still low due to the letter that was issued by the self-seeker. This false information threaten supply of cattle and consumption of meat reduced now we are picking up but supply is still low.’’ Kiddu explained.
He revealed that due to the low supply, the price per kilo gram of beef have gone up from between 10,000- 12,000 to 12,000- 13,000 depending on the quality and quantity of meat the buy is willing to purchase.
At the beginning of March, 2024 the commissioner in charge of Animal Health in the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) Dr. Anna Rose Ademun issued a directive imposing a quarantine in Kampala City after citing the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease which caused panic among the raw beef dealers and people in restaurant businesses.
This prompted Cabinet to seat and quash the earlier directive issued by the commissioner and was questioned why she didn’t first seek clearance for higher authorities.
Although the directive wasn’t enforced after the political leadership in Kampala objected the revelations from the Ministry of Agriculture, the threat it caused is still being felt by the dealers.
