President Museveni who is also the commander in chief of the Armed Forces has elevated four senior Police Directors to the rank of Assistant Inspector of Police.
Among the beneficiaries in this latest promotion, is the Traffic and Safety Directorate acting boss Lawrence Niwabine who have been elevate from the rank of senior Commissioner of Police to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP).
Before he was given the acting role of the acting Traffic Police boss, Niwabine was put on bench for a sizeable period but later recalled to serve in the acting capacity of the directorate; he also formerly headed Kampala Metropolitan Traffic and Safety Police.
Other senior commissioners of Police promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police are Stephen Tanui who is currently the Deputy Director of Fire and Rescue Directorate, Joseph Ogona the Director Interpol and International Relations, James Akola Director Logistics and Engineering and John Geofrey Musana the Deputy Director of Human Resource and Administration.
Meanwhile a total of 25 Uganda Police Officers have been equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to serve in the United Nations (UN) and are now waiting to be deployed in UN Mission in South Sudan next year.
The two weeks training was the first-ever UN Police Job-Specific pre-deployment training in Uganda and Africa and was held from November 18 to 29th, 2024.
The Police’s mouth piece ACP Kituuma Rusoke reveal to the reports in a press conference at Naguru, that the officers who passed the UN Police Interviews in January 2024, underwent rigorous training at the Police’s Field Force Training base in Kikandwa Wakiso District.
The training program included a mandatory Strategic Guidance Framework (SGF) training, a pre-test, and a two-week training session. Trainers were drawn from Uganda, Ghana, Malawi, Gambia, and New York.
SCP Tusiime Ann, Deputy Director Human Resource Development, officially closed the training, emphasizing the importance of applying the acquired knowledge and skills during their mission exercise. The UNMISS mission aims to support peace consolidation, state-building, and economic development in South Sudan.
Tumusiime asserted that, this training marks a significant step in preparing Ugandan police officers for their critical role in maintaining peace and security in South Sudan.
