LEAGUE LEADERS KCCA FC DRAWS STUBBORN MBARARA CITY IN STANBIC UGANDA CUP

The draws for the round of 16 of the 2022/23 Stanbic Uganda Cup have been successfully conducted on Tuesday 28, February, 2023 with teams identifying their next opponents.

The joint record holder of the Uganda Cup (Stanbic Uganda Cup) and league leaders, KCCA FC has drawn stubborn Mbarara City FC and will be playing their first leg at Philip Omondi Stadium on March 11, 2023.

The draw function was held at FUFA Complex presided over by FUFA’s 3rd Vice President Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi.

Former KCCA FC legend and Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Sadiq Wassa also graced the occasion and shared his story in the prestigious knockout competition.

“I’m privileged to have won the Uganda Cup both as a player and a coach. This competition is worth winning because knockout games are always thrilling. I therefore thank FUFA for inviting me to be part of today’s function.”  Sadiq said.

Sadiq won the Uganda Cup as a player with KCC (now KCCA FC) in 1990 and twice as a coach with URA  FC in the 2011/12 and 2013/14 seasons respectively.

“I remember SC Villa had won the League and were aiming to clinch a double. They had beaten us in midweek to lift the League title and we had to face them in the Cup final over the weekend. Luckily, we defeated them and denied them a double.” Sadiq reminisced.

The vice president Nakiwala lauded the sponsors for sticking with this competition, indicating their arrival brought a big improvement.

FUFA Competitions Director Aisha Nalule said that the date for the game between SC Villa and BUL will be communicated and the winner between the two will entertain Onduparaka FC.

“We received a decision from the FUFA Judicial bodies about the game between BUL FC and SC Villa and a date on when the game will be played shall be communicated soon.”

Nalule also confirmed that Kisugu United was eliminated after Paidha Black Angles won the petition for the former’s use of ineligible players.

In the draws conducted, Wakiso Giants will face rivals Vipers in the Wakiso derby, KCCA FC will be at home to Mbarara City FC while Soltilo Bright Stars will take on Kiyinda Boys.

In the other fixtures Police FC take on Ndejje University, Express FC will host Paidha Black Angels, Adjumani TC FC face Bunyaruguru while Calvary FC will be at home to Kitara FC.

The round of 16 fixtures will be played between 11th -17th March 2023. Every team at this stage is assured of a cash prize of UGX 3M.

Bull FC is the reigning champion of the Stanbic Uganda Cup, having clinched to this title in Masindi last year when they edged Uganda Premier league giant Vipers SC 3-1.
