The Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) has arrested and prosecuted a 20-year-old woman at Wakiso Magistrate court for allegedly trafficking children.
The suspect identified as Babirye Sumayo was arrested by Detectives from Entebbe Police Division who also did and concluded investigations. She was charged with aggravated trafficking in children and arraigned before the Wakiso Magistrate Court today, 11th December, 2024.
The Deputy Spokesperson of KMP Luke Owoyesiggyire said that on 16th November 2024, a report was filed at Kasanje Police Station in Wakiso District regarding the abduction of Nakiwala Goreti, an 8-year-old pupil of Delight Primary School.
It was alleged that the suspect, Babirye Sumaya, lured the child from her home in Ssazi Lulongo Cell under the pretext of taking her for prayers at Kikaaya Mosque. Instead, she directed a bodaboda rider to transport them to Mpigi Town.
The victim and the suspect remained missing for two weeks. Investigations revealed that Babirye had been sighted in Ssembabule District in the company of two children. Upon realizing she was being pursued, the suspect fled and was later apprehended in Mutungo, Kampala. At the time of her arrest, the suspect was found with the victim and another child.
Owoyesigyire also said through a collaborative effort between detectives from Entebbe Central Police Station and Jinja Road Police, the victim was safely recovered and reunited with her parents.
The suspect will face charges of Aggravated Trafficking in Children. These charges carry severe penalties due to the gravity of the offense, which involves trafficking for purposes of human sacrifice.
We thank the public for their vigilance and cooperation in providing information that led to the recovery of the victim and the arrest of the suspect.
