CENSUS DAY ONE MARRED WITH CHALLENGES

The start of the keenly anticipated National Census 2024 has been marred with a number of challenges causing delays the enumeration exercise, in some places the iPad failed to respond to the commands that enumerators were giving them to record data from the individual house hold.

While in other areas the enumerators deliberately refused to start the exercise demand UBOS to  first clear their allowances for the 9 days training totaling to UGX 180,000 , which accumulated from the 20,000 they were promised per day.

The Archbishop of Kampala Paul Ssemogerere who was enumerated at his home at Rubaga said that he was delayed by the enumerators to attend to a press briefing regarding other issues due to failure of the gadget they were using.

After some time they managed to operate their machines and he was smashed with household question which took some time and ended some minutes past 3 o’clock thus delaying him to attend a press briefing that was scheduled to commence at exactly 2:00 pm.   

One of the Journalist who also was waiting for the Archbishop’s press conference and preferred to remain anonymous said that he resides at Mukono but he waited for the enumerators to come but in vain yet in his village he didn’t even a single home being visited, he became frustrated and moved to Kampala do his own activities.

Alfred  Musamali, the Publicity and Advocacy Advisor  at UBOS acknowledged the setbacks and the inconvenience caused to the enumerators and the citizen but however he said that the problem have been rectified and work in day two will move on smoothly.

“As UBOS, we regret the incontinences caused to masses and our enumerator due to the technical fault of our gadgets, I therefore i wish to apologize on behalf of the bureau for the delay in reaching you this morning.’’ Mr. Musamali apologized

Some of the enumerators in some parts of the country tasked with the responsibility of gathering data, found themselves struggling with unfamiliar technology.

Mr. Musamali also indicated that there are efforts being made to rectify the situation, reassuring citizens of ongoing efforts to overcome such challenges. “We are working round the clock to address these challenges,” he assured.

In Butambala the exercise by press time was moving on well during the morning ours. Sulaiman Bukya the district resident commissioner (RDC) confirmed to this website that enumerators in his area didn’t face challenges with the gadgets and work was moving on as planned.

He said that he checked on Ngando, Bulo and Kalamba town council and found when work was going on well despite the little morning drizzle.
