FATAL ACCIDENTS CLAIM 137 LIVES IN 10 DAYS

A total of 148 lives were lost in 137 fatal accidents that occurred between the periods of 11th -22nd April 2023 out of the 832 total accidents that happened in the same period.

This was revealed by the directorate of traffic Police spokes person ASP. Nampiima Faridah in the same weekly police conference held at Naguru police headquarters on Monday 24, April, 2023.

Nampiima told reporters that from the 832 traffic accidents that happened during that period, the victims were 819 and out of these 148 perished while 671 were seriously injured and 230 people escaped with minor injuries.

She said that the main cause of these accidents include; careless overtaking by motorists, sudden turning without indicating the side, sudden entrance in the main road, break failure, drink driving and careless crossing of roads by pedestrians which accounts for the largest percentage of death in the period.

Kasirye Ronald a taxi driver says that the rampant accidents are now caused by the poor roads and over speeding by some drivers yet driving on roads which they are not well conversant with.

Meanwhile, a total of 17,552 traffic offenders were arrested in the same period and issued with fine tickets. Out of these, 2,884 were arrested for over speeding, 3,487 for DMC, 1320 lacked driving permits, 1,307 had no third party insurance, 1010 had not fastened their seat belts, 459 had no triangular reflector and 304 were driving while talking on phones.

Nampiima also said that 950 motor cycles were impounded for not putting on helmets and 2,702 were ridding without permits and the motor cycles are kept at various police stations pending payments of fines.
