KCCA ERASED STRUCTURES BUILT ILLEGALLY ALONG KANSANGA WATER CHANNEL

As Uganda continue to prepare for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit and G77 meeting, Kampala Capital Authority (KCCA) also continue to ensure a smart city ,has demolished illegal structures that were constructed along Kansanga stream.

The structures were demolished to pave way for the enlargement of the water channel that links to Lake Victoria so as to reduce on the constant floods that bring movement to a standstill whenever it rains

KCCA public relations officer Dan Niwabine said that the challenge of floods in the city is largely caused by broking of the water channels when residents in the areas where they flow from to Lake Victoria and this prompted the authority to act by demolishing all structures along the streams.

One of the illegal structures being constructed at a water drainage that link to Kansanga mail channel in Kiwafu Zone Kitalanga, Makindye Division

“We’re demolishing these illegal structures to ensure that the drainage and channels down streams are cleared up to the catchment area such that flooding reduces.” Niwabine said.

Although residents say they have land titles and bibbanja agreements, Niwabine said that they will not be compensated as they were claiming because they constructed there structures along the stream illegally.

Yiga Gonzaga the LC I chairman of Kiwafu zone, Kansanga Kitalanga parish said that the many landlords have varied land titles which they acquired in the early 1970s and those who own the Bibanja and plots bought from them legally.

“We will not allow our structures to be erased just like that without being compensated, some residents here have land titles which dates far back as early as 1970 and sold party of their land to Bibanja holders who also have their sale agreements.’’  Yiga said
