Despite agreeing to end the strike after meeting President Museveni, traders have got mixed reactions were some are skeptical as to whether government will bow to their demands.
Some traders who talked to this website say that although president Museveni in the meeting asked them to open up the shop as he ordered URA officials to waive off the penalties it had slapped on imports and also halt the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solution (EFRIS), they are still worried that government will not reduce on taxes and stop the EFRIS system.
During the meeting, the President informed the traders the he will meet the technocrats from the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development and URA on the 24th,April 2024 for wider consultations.
The President also promised to meet all traders after on 7th, May 2024 at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
He also directed all penalties to be suspended by URA in the meantime to give room for wider consultations. The Minister for Kampala Minsa Kabanda convened a press conference at Hotel Africana with the Federation of Uganda Traders Association leaders led by John Kabanda and announced the end of the strike.
Similarly KACITA leaders also in a press conference at their presided over by Musoke Nagenda the board’s chairperson also follow suit.
