More Ugandan women are applying for dependent permits for their spouses – Internal Affairs

Contrary to African and Ugandan culture in particular, there’s an increasing number of women in the country applying for dependent permits for their foreign male partners.

This was revealed by Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi while addressing reporters at Naguru Police Headquarters in Kampala.

The act looks peculiar considering the African tradition but here in Uganda Women have resorted to register their foreign spouses as their dependants with an aim of depending on them instead because it becomes easier for such foreigners to secure resident documents.

Mundeyi consider this situation as something that is baffling considering the African traditional norms and values and government is yet to ascertain the cause of such trend.

According to the Directorate of Immigration and Emigration, it appears like there are one too many foreign nationals registering as spouses of Ugandans.

“In African traditional and norms, men are typically providers rather than dependents. It looks ridiculous and peculiar for a man to start to become a dependant on a woman,” Mundeyi said.

He further argued that permitting foreign men to rely on Ugandan women for residency status could undermine traditional societal roles and may have broader implications for immigration policy.

Mundeyi also said that this trend has raised alarm within the immigration department, which has issued a strong discouragement against such applications.

The spokesperson stressed that the department is closely monitoring these applications and considering stricter measures to address the issue.
