MUSEVENI RENEWS JUSTICE BYAKAMA’S TERM OF OFFICE

President Museveni has reappointed Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama as the chairperson of the Electoral Commission for another term despite continued criticisms by many opposition big figures.

The commission’s  term of office expired on January 5, 2024. According to the Constitution, “the members of the Commission shall hold office for seven years, and their appointment may be renewed for one more term only.”

In a letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, dated January 5, 2024, the president forwarded Justice Byabakama’s name to the presidential appointment’s committee for vetting.

The president also renewed the term of office for Hajjati Aisha Lubega as the deputy chairperson and Stephen Tashobya as a commissioner.

According to the letter, the president has appointed four new faces as commissioners to the Electoral Commission, including former Nansana Municipality MP in the ninth and 10th parliaments, Robert Kasule Ssebunya, former Kyoga County MP, Anthony Akol , Makerere University don, Dr.Sallie Simba Kayunga,  and Pamela Etonu Okudi, the former acting head of administration of the commission.

These new appoint are now required to present their CVs to parliament for vetting and confirmation.
