POLICE CONSTABLE CAUGHT IN ACTS OF THEFT AFTER DESERTING AND JOINING A PRIVATE SECURITY FORCE

The Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested and detained one of their own for vandalizing electricity metallic rail bars, having been on the run after allegedly stealing a motorcycle of a boda boda rider in Kampala initially.

 Ahabwe Michael a police constable who has been on the deserters list from CPS Kampala, disappeared after allegedly stealing a motorcycle of a boda boda rider who was identified as Walusimbi Samuel last year.

The motorcycle had been impounded during a normal traffic enforcement operation, where the officer was tasked, to deliver it at the CPS yard, but instead he escaped with it. Since then the suspect disappeared from CPS Kampala and was declared a police deserter.

While in his hiding in Mbarara, the force’s mouth piece SCP. Fred Enanga said, the suspect joined SGA Security Company, as a security guard and his first deployment was on the 20.01.2024 at the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd, where after 18 days on job, on the February 16, 2024, he was arrested for vandalizing electricity metallic rail bars.

The case file of theft was transferred with the suspect to CPS Kampala, for further court process and the suspect will be committed to court after investigations are done.

‘’Such acts of robbery and theft by current or former police officers, are a disgrace to the force.’’  ‘’It is so shameful, when police officers exploit their position of power for personal gain, this erodes public trust in the force and tarnishes the reputation of the other five thousand police forces who honorably serve and protect Ugandans each day.’’ SCP. Enanga said.

He further said; ‘’We continue to rid the force, of such rogue officers. We are also sharing his images so that if there are any persons victimized by him, they can come forward and report or register their complaints at KMP Headquarters at CPS Kampala.’’

The officer is to be charged with theft, robbery and desertion, the two former in criminal court and the later in the force’s disciplinary court after which he will officially be discharged.
