Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine said the president, through the constitution, gives him the power to pardon any prisoner if he deserves it.
According to Frank Baine, the president’s pardon of the 200 prisoners was necessary because they had been in jail for a long time and were given the sentences they were serving until President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni pardoned them.
Frank Baine said the 200 detainees will be released soon after completing their background checks.
Baine said the 200 prisoners who were granted amnesty by President Museveni were in a difficult situation and needed more treatment because the prisons where they were counted were small, which is why the president granted them the amnesty.
