Cecilia Barbra Atim Ogwal the longest serving member of Parliament and a management consultant, has been a member of Uganda’s legislature continuously since 1996.
By time of her death, Ogwal 77, the powerful Woman Member of Parliament for the Dokolo District and former Miss Uganda is said to have succumbed to cancer at a certain hospital in India on Thursday morning.
A close family member confirmed the demise of the out spoken MP and revealed that she has been suffering cancer disease and flown to India when conditions worsened a few weeks ago for better medical attention.
“It is sad, Mama Cecilia Ogwal is gone, she is on more,” said a source who preferred to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to speak on behalf of the deceased’s family.
The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among announced the death of Ogwal on Thursday morning on her ‘X’ (Twitter handle).
“ It is with a heavy heart and pain that I announce the passing on of our Mother, Mentor and Role Model Imat Cecilia Atim Ogwal, the Hourable Member representing the women of Dokolo District. I send my sincere sympathies to her dear husband and the family, friends, the people of Lango and colleagues!’’ She posted on X (Twitter handle).
Ogwal has been serving as a member of the parliamentary Committee of Physical Infrastructure in charge of overseeing and covering policy matters related to Lands, Housing, Urban development, Works and Transport, and Physical Planning.
