The Police at Old Kampala have commenced inquiries into a shooting incident that occurred on 3rd June 2024 at Gwanda Mall, Kisenyi Parish, Kampala Central, about 6 PM.
It is alleged that Kalyebi Ismail, a security guard attached to SGA Company, was on duty at Gwanda Mall when he arrested Katongole, whom he suspected to be a criminal. During the arrest, there was a scuffle, and Katongole overpowered Kalyebi Ismail.
In response, Kalyebi picked up his gun and shot Katongole once in the waist, thereby disabling him.
Upon receiving information about the incident, the territorial police units of Muzaana and Old Kampala responded to the scene and managed to evacuate the victim to Mulago Hospital, where he is currently admitted with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson Luke in a statement he released said that Police have also retrieved CCTV footage to help in the ongoing investigation into what exactly led to the shooting.
The suspect, Kalyebi Ismail, is currently on the run and efforts are being geared to apprehend him to face the law.
“We urge the public to remain calm and report any information that may assist in the arrest of the suspect.’’
Incidences of shooting by private guards have became a common phenomenon, in June, 2023 a private shoot and injured man after a short scuffle and in July the same year a secucirty guard attached to Plus security company Ltd while at Bugolobi market shoot and critically injure a lady who was a shopkeeper and in January this year Isa Warigo also opened fire on Andrew Tumwebaze his fellow security guard over UGX 2000 killing him instantly.
Meanwhile, Nateete Police Division reports the successful arrest of five suspects involved in an aggravated robbery incident. The arrests occurred on June 1, 2024, at approximately 3:00 AM during a foot patrol conducted by the Wakaliga Police Post.
The suspects are identified as Ssenjobe Robert alias Soda, Kateraga Elvis alias Mark, and three others, were found in possession of various stolen items, including a TV and a smartphone, as well as dangerous weapons such as pangas and house-breaking implements.
Two of the suspects were apprehended at the scene of the crime. Police also recovered two pangas, master keys, and other breaking implements, which have been secured as evidence.
The suspects have been charged and will be arraigned in court tomorrow on allegations of aggravated robbery.
The owner of the recovered items, including the TV and Smartphone, has been traced and his statement has been taken and Police is increasing visibility through patrols in residential areas to help curb the vice of burglaries and robberies.
